Why is Singapore so small?
Singapore is small because it is a city-state and an island. The British gained control of the island in 1819 and didn't need more land for their initial purposes. Since independence in 1965, Singapore has increased its land area through land reclamation, but geographical constraints limit the extent of this expansion. Its proximity to Malaysia and the Riau Islands in Indonesia restricts the area available for reclamation to its maritime borders.
